The course is divided into two years of 60 ECTS each, and involves the "mixed" mode - that is, with remote lectures for about 50 percent of the total. The first year will be entirely carried out at the university site in Milan, with exclusively in-person classes (the only exception will be the language course for the achievement of the C1 English level delivered remotely by the SLAM University Language Center). Instead, the online mode will be reserved for the second year, with the exception of specific activities that will remain in-presence and will be delivered in concentrated periods of time, i.e. laboratories, possible meetings with the thesis supervisor, tutoring activities, and educational trips.
All candidates for admission must prove that they have acquired an adequate knowledge of the English language. Knowledge of the English language will be ascertained by possession of official certification, at least level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), not more than three years prior to the submission of the application.
Alternatively, for candidates who hold a university degree, or an equivalent qualification issued abroad, related to a course of study delivered in English, knowledge of the English language will be ascertained by means of an oral interview.
You are not required to know Italian beforehand, but you are expected to learn Italian by the end of the course.
An Italian language assessments (level A2) is scheduled, if you do not already have the appropriate certification.
In order to obtain the qualification, those who are not in possession of an Italian qualification (Bachelor's degree or upper secondary school diploma) must demonstrate a knowledge of Italian at level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
This level must be attested, by the end of the course of study, in one of the following ways
- by submitting a language certificate obtained no more than three years prior to the date of submission of the application, of level A2 or higher (for the list of language certificates recognised by the University, please refer to the page Italian language for foreigners tests and courses). The certification must be sent to the SLAM University Language Centre via the service InformaStudenti, category Language tests;
- via an entry-level test, provided by SLAM and accessible only once, compulsory for all those who do not have a valid certification. Those who do not reach A2 level will be placed in one or more 60-hour Italian courses with compulsory attendance according to the certified level.
Those who do not take the entry-level test or do not pass the final course test within 6 attempts will have to obtain certification privately in order to obtain the 3 credits of Additional language skills: Italian.

Knowledge of English at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is required in order to obtain the qualification. This level can be certified in the following ways:
- by submitting a language certificate obtained no more than 3 years prior to the date of submission of the application, of level C1 or higher (for the list of language certificates recognised by the University, see the website: https://www.unimi.it/it/node/39322). The certification must be uploaded at the time of enrolment or, subsequently, on the portal http://studente.unimi.it/uploadCertificazioniLingue;
- level of English achieved during a Unimi degree course through the SLAM (Centro Linguistico d'Ateneo SLAM) Language Centre, including certifications validated during a three-year undergraduate degree programme. Certificates obtained less than four years before the date of application are considered valid. Verification is carried out automatically without any need to attach certificates;
- by entry-level test, administered by the University Language Centre SLAM exclusively during the first year, from October to January. In the event of failing the test, it will be necessary to follow the courses provided by SLAM.
The entry-level test is compulsory for all those who are not in possession of a valid certification.
Those who do not take the entry-level test by December or do not pass the final course test within 6 attempts will have to obtain certification privately before graduation.
Laboratory activities are planned throughout the course, both in the first and in the second year.

Yes, you will have several options to personalize your curriculum
In the first year you will have the opportunity to acquire 18ECTS from a variety of elective courses, while in the second year the credits obtainable through electives will be 15, including 9ECTS of an elective course from other degree programs.

The academic year does not correspond to a calendar year: it begins in October and ends in September of the following year.
Teaching activities are generally divided into two semesters:
